Einstein Lectures 2017: Simon Blackburn on Truth in Human Affairs

Is there such a thing as absolute objectivity and truth? Or is truth always subjective and relative to a particular point of view?

English philosopher Simon Blackburn tries to find some middle ground in this ancient, but still highly topical philosophical debate.

The lectures are in English and entry is free of charge.

-------------------------------------

Truth as an abstract concept - Monday, 2017/11/20, 19:30

Einstein is famous for a shift in his philosophical position after the annus mirabilis of 1905. Simon Blackburn shows in his first lecture that a deeper understanding of this shift may be gained by focusing on its implications for Einstein’s understanding of truth. The lecture explains the principal theories about truth that dominated the last century of philosophy, and the difficulty philosophers have found in saying anything substantive about the nature of truth itself.

-------------------------------------

Truth and the pragmatist challenge - Tuesday, 2017/11/21, 17:15
In his second lecture, Simon Blackburn focuses on the understanding of truth in science and and the famous attack of the so-called ‘pragmatists’ on the very idea of truth. Scientific Realists claim that only by conceiving of truth as correspondence with reality can we explain the great success of science. Pragmatists deny this and propose alternative explanations.

-------------------------------------

Truth in feeling - Wednesday, 2017/11/22, 19:30

While scientific realism seems little more than common-sense to many people, in debated areas such as aesthetics, interpretative disciplines like law, or places where feelings loom large, such as morals, truth seems harder to find. Simon Blackburn argues in his third and last Einstein lecture that this division is unwarranted.

Come to chat in English. We meet in the CaféBar in the GenerationenHaus at 1700. If it is too noisy we meet at a table in the corridor.

At 18:00 there is music: techno hypnotic sounds.  And then at 19:30 there is the English Carol Service at the Heilliggeist Church in the Bahnhofplatz.

The trip of 15-16 to the Black Forest and the Stuttgart Christmas Market is cancelled because of organisational problems. Next trips planned in January 13-14 and February 10-11.

Anyone interested in a dinner on December 26 or December 29? Make a comment on the web event page. Or in dancing on 29, 30 or 31 December - contact Graham.
