Fri 1 – Sat 2 St Ursula Church Christmas Bazaar

The 2017 Bazaar will be on 1 and 2 December - Friday evening, Saturday morning and lunchtime until mid-afternoon.

All our regular stalls will be there - patchwork, books, British food, the restaurant, mulled wine, toys, bric-à-brac, a chance to win something, and of course, the chance to meet friends, to chat and to relax.

It is reported that Father Christmas will be putting in an appearance at some time on the Saturday, depending on flying conditions from the North Pole.

The flyer is on http://www.stursula.ch/2017BazaarE.pdf

Amadeus Choir Berne marks the
beginning of Advent with a musical
treat
Over the last years, the Bernese Amadeus Choir has repeatedly performed masterpieces of choral music in English such as Handel's Messiah or Purcell's King Arthur. In 2017 this exploration of the English repertoire continues with a seasonal concert featuring Benjamin Britten's Saint Nicolas cantata and The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Britten's cantata was first performed in 1948 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lancing College in Sussex. The premiere brought together lay musicians and choirs from several neighbouring public schools. The title part
was interpreted by Peter Pears, Britten's lifelong personal and professional partner, who was himself an alumnus of Lancing.

The Lark Ascending was inspired by a poem of the same name by George Meredith. Vaughan Williams had begun his composition before the Great War, its premiere, however, was not to take place until 1920. The piece enjoyed immediate popularity in Britain and still ranks highly among the nation's classical favourites.

For this project the Amadeus Choir cooperates with the vocal ensemble Suppléments musicaux and the orchestra Arte Frizzante, thus continuing its tradition to enable young musicians. The solo parts will be interpreted by violinist Maria Strelbitska and the English tenor Jonathan Stoughton. Bohdan Shved, artistic director of the Amadeus Choir since 2012, will be conducting.

The concert will be given twice: Friday 1 December and Saturday 2 December 2017 at 7.30 p.m. (doors and box office open at 7 p.m.) at the Petruskirche (Brunnadernstrasse 40, 3006 Berne).

Come to chat in English. We meet in the CaféBar in the GenerationenHaus at 1700. If it is too noisy we meet at a table in the corridor.

At 18:00 there is music: techno hypnotic sounds.  And then at 19:30 there is the English Carol Service at the Heilliggeist Church in the Bahnhofplatz.

The trip of 15-16 to the Black Forest and the Stuttgart Christmas Market is cancelled because of organisational problems. Next trips planned in January 13-14 and February 10-11.

Anyone interested in a dinner on December 26 or December 29? Make a comment on the web event page. Or in dancing on 29, 30 or 31 December - contact Graham.
